Mentoring and Skills Development

In a workshop I led in Xalapa, Veracruz, México, I had design and illustration students collaborate on a project from concept development to final product, simulating a real-world work experience.

As a farewell gift, I designed and produced by hand a booklet for the students that included a description of the project; a guide to printing terms, types of folding, methods of binding, and standard paper and envelope sizes; a Fibonacci scale; and a complete scale of leading increments.

 

As a starting point for the project, student teams were given 8 popular children’s stories to choose from, so they could begin exploring and experimenting with design concepts inspired by familiar memories from childhood. I encouraged the students to think beyond the traditional conception of what a book is. Their innovative ideas are shown below.
